Malcolm Lawrence, a retired nurse, almost had another heart attack when his wife Ann-Marie told him that she was pregnant with their child.
Lawrence always thought that he was too old for fatherhood with his young wife. However, he decided to undergo IVF treatment, through the NHS, to help his wife conceive a baby of her own.
The couple underwent intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatment, where Malcolm’s single frozen sperm was thawed out and injected directly into one of Ann-Marie’s denuded eggs with microscopic assistance.
To the couple’s utter glee they were blessed with a 7-pound healthy baby girl, Cerys–May, on March 10, 2012!
Lawrence said, ”It was a real shock. I still can’t believe it has happened. There have been some people who say things like, “You are too old to be a father” and others saying my health isn’t good enough. But I’ve proved them all wrong by giving my wife what she always wanted – a child of her own.”
The new father, who is also a proud grandfather, lives in Bridgend, South Wales and already has grown-up children from his previous marriage. His only son Gavin, 29, has two children of his own.
Malcolm Lawrence, met Ann-Marie when she was 19, and married her nine years ago when he was 57. The couple could not have a child naturally as Malcolm had a bladder operation, 30 years ago, which prevented him from fathering a child by natural means. At this point, Ann-Marie was too young for IVF. But Malcolm had already frozen and stored his sperm at a University hospital of Wales at Cardiff where it had remained for the next ten years.
Last year the couple was called upon to start their IVF treatment. Ann-Marie became pregnant at the first try and later on, became the proud mother of a baby girl who was born at the Princess of Wales Hospital, Cardiff.
Now the couple plans to try again for a sibling for Cerys-May in a year’s time, as they are allowed two cycles with IVF treatment.
Sadly, Malcolm Lawrence is not a very healthy man. He had suffered twelve heart attacks, has a bad back and pain in his hips, and also suffers from a chronic lung disorder.
His wife said, “I’m not bothered about the age difference and I try not to worry about the future too much. I’m just happy to have a daughter”. Malcolm’s son Kevin, too, is overjoyed that there is a new addition to their home.
Baby Cerys-May’s birth is an IVF success story indeed.
